In Memoriam: Supervisor Wilma Chan
With sadness, Genesis expresses our condolences to the family and loved ones of Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan (District 3). Sup. Chan was tragically killed by a driver while walking in Alameda on November 3, 2021.
Marcia Lovelace, a delegate on the Genesis Leadership Council offered a reflection,
"In many years of attending long, boring and frustrating Alameda County Board of Supervisors meetings, I often saw Wilma Chan step out of the "politician" box and show her humanity in ways that kept my cynicism in check. I didn't always agree with her, but I always respected her. More than once, I saw her actually respond to the people who had come to testify and even change her vote because of what she heard--something that is way too rare in such meetings. It was clear that she saw herself as a voice for those not usually included in decision making. She was a justice warrior who will be sorely missed."
In addition to a "justice warrior", Sup. Chan was a mother and a grandmother. May her loved ones feel our prayers and may her soul find rest, for she is home.
